農の里に欠かせない紺屋さん
奈良県の東部に位置する大和高原は、なだらかな平地と昼夜の寒暖差に恵まれた丘陵地。米や大和野菜など、豊かな作物が実る農村が古くから形成されてきた。集落には鋤や鍬を拵える野鍛冶や、笊や籠などを誂える籠屋などがあり、農作業を支えてきた。そんな農の村に欠かせない仕事の一つが「紺屋」、藍染の染物を行う仕事だ。
植物の藍を染料にした藍染は、見た目だけでなく実用としても実に機能的、虫が嫌う成分が含まれているため防虫効果を持ち、丈夫で長持ち、紫外線も防ぐため野良着には最適だった。
明治時代までは重宝された紺屋だが、時代の波には逆らえずほとんど姿を消してしまった。そんな中、昔ながらの伝統的な製法を守る紺屋が大和高原に生き残っている。宇陀市の室生下笠間にある井上紺屋だ。
"A dye shop that is indispensable to the agricultural village"
The Yamato Plateau, located in the eastern part of Nara Prefecture, is a hilly region blessed with gentle flatlands and large temperature differences between day and night. Farming villages have been formed since ancient times, producing abundant crops such as rice and Yamato vegetables. In the villages, there are blacksmiths who make hoes and shovels, and basket makers who make custom-made sieves and baskets, which support agricultural work. One job that is indispensable to such agricultural villages is the "indigo dyer," or the job of dyeing fabrics with indigo.
Indigo dye, which uses the indigo plant as a dye, is not only visually appealing but also highly functional, containing ingredients that insects dislike, making it insect repellent, durable and long-lasting, and protecting against ultraviolet rays, making it ideal for work clothes.
Indigo dyers were highly valued until the Meiji period, but they could not resist the tides of the times and have almost disappeared. However, one indigo dyer who preserves the old traditional manufacturing methods survives on the Yamato Plateau. It is Inoue Indigo dyer's shop in Muro Shimokasama, Uda City.
“农村里不可缺少的染坊”
大和高原位于奈良县东部，是一片丘陵地带，平原平缓，昼夜温差较大。这里自古以来就形成了盛产水稻、大和蔬菜等农作物的农村。村里有制造锄头和铲子的铁匠，也有制作定制筛子和篮子的篮子制造者，他们为农业工作提供支持。对于这样的农业村庄来说，必不可少的工作之一就是“kon'ya”，即用靛蓝给织物染色的工作。 靛蓝染料由靛蓝植物制成，不仅外观美丽，而且实用性强；含有昆虫讨厌的成分，因此具有驱虫效果，持久耐用，还能防紫外线，非常适合用作工作服。 蓝染师直到明治时期都受到高度重视，但他们无法抵抗时代的变化，几乎消失了。然而，大和高原上却有一位染工依然沿用传统方法生存下来。这是位于宇陀市室下笠的井上绫屋。
膨大な手間を厭わない！伝統の藍染
奈良の伝統工芸品に指定されている「笠間藍染」をただ一人受け継ぐのが井上加代さん、明治初期から続く紺屋の五代目だ。
かつては原料の藍を栽培する所から行っていたというが、今は藍染の本場である徳島から、藍の葉を発酵させた染料の元である蒅（すくも）を仕入れている。それでも蒅の状態から染めができるまでにするには膨大な作業が必要だ。藍建てと呼ばれる作業、手順はこうだ。すくもに熱湯を入れ、石灰と小麦粉と酒を加えて発酵させる。温度管理に気を付けながら毎日攪拌して1か月経つと、ようやく染料として使えるようになる。布に模様を付ける時には、糸で縛り、あるいは型紙に糊を置いて染色しない部分を作る。染料に何度も付け、色落ちしなくなるまで洗い、色止めをして乾かす。紺屋の豊富な経験と地道な手仕事があって、鮮やかな藍色の布が生まれるのだ。
“Don't shy away from the enormous effort! Traditional indigo dyeing”
Kayo Inoue is the only person to continue the "Kasama Indigo Dyeing" designated as a traditional craft of Nara, and is the fifth generation of an indigo dyer that has been in business since the early Meiji period.
In the past, they started by cultivating the indigo, but now they purchase sukumo, the source of the dye made from fermented indigo leaves, from Tokushima, the home of indigo dyeing. Even so, it takes a huge amount of work to turn the sukumo into a dye that can be used for dyeing. The process, called indigo building, goes like this. Boiled water is poured into the sukumo, and lime, wheat flour, and sake are added to ferment it. After a month of stirring every day while carefully controlling the temperature, it is finally ready to use as a dye. When applying a pattern to the fabric, the fabric is tied with thread or glue is placed on a stencil to create areas that will not be dyed. The fabric is dipped in dye many times, washed until the color does not fade, and then dried after being color-fixed. It is the indigo dyer's extensive experience and steady handwork that produces vibrant indigo fabric.
“不要介意付出巨大的努力！传统靛蓝染色”
奈良县传统工艺笠间蓝染工艺的传承人，只有井上佳代，他是蓝染行业的第五代传人，从明治初期就开始经营蓝染行业。 过去，他们通过种植靛蓝开始创业，但现在他们从靛蓝染色的发源地德岛采购 sukumo（由发酵的靛蓝叶制成的染料基底）。即便如此，从茎秆阶段开始对织物进行染色前的准备仍需要大量的工作。靛蓝染色的过程包括以下步骤：将沸水加入 sukumo，然后加入石灰、面粉和清酒，然后将混合物发酵。经过一个月每天搅拌并小心控制温度后，混合物终于可以用作染料了。在织物上创建图案时，用线将区域绑起来或在模板上涂上胶水，以创建不会被染色的区域。将衣服反复浸入染料中，清洗直至颜色不再褪色，然后固色并干燥。鲜艳的靛蓝布料得益于靛蓝染色工人丰富的经验和精湛的手工。
義父の技を残したい！
今では天然の本藍を使って染める所は少ない。
「全部お義父さんのやり方のまま」と言う井上さん、元々職人になるつもりはなかったのだそう。先代の義父が高齢のため思うように仕事ができなくなった時、自分が習っておけばサラリーマンの夫がゆくゆく継ぐときに教えられるかもしれない。義父と夫とのつなぎとして一時的にはじめたのだ。しかし、覚えるごとに藍染の持つ仕事の奥行きに魅せられるように。子供に手をかけるように藍を育て、使い手のことを考えながら丁寧に染める。今では夫も手伝うが五代目はあくまで井上さん、全国からの注文や、藍染体験も引き受けている。
キレイな水と温暖な気候、藍染にふさわしい里山で受け継いできた職人技。
「夢中でやってきて気が付けばここまで来ただけ」と井上さんは言うが、その淀みなき手さばきには「継ぐべき者が継いだ」という自信がみなぎっていた。
" Want to preserve father-in-law's skills!"
Nowadays, there are few places that use natural indigo dyeing.
"I do everything the way my father-in-law did," says Inoue, who never intended to become a craftsman. When his father-in-law became too old to do the work he wanted, Inoue learned how to do it, so that he could teach his husband, who is a businessman, when he eventually took over. He started working temporarily as a bridge between his father-in-law and husband. However, the more he learned, the more he was fascinated by the depth of indigo dyeing work. He grows the indigo as if it were a child, and dyes it carefully while thinking about the user. Nowadays, her husband helps out, but Inoue is still the fifth generation, and he accepts orders from all over the country and offers indigo dyeing experiences.
The craftsmanship has been passed down in the clean water, warm climate, and Satoyama, a village that is perfect for indigo dyeing.
"I was so passionate about it that I just realized I've come this far," says Inoue, but his smooth hands are filled with confidence that "the right person to take over has taken over."
"我要保住岳父的本事！"
