京都の旅の玄関口、JR京都駅に降り立つと、すぐ北にある巨大な寺に驚いた人も多いのではないだろうか。
都会の中心に奇跡のように残る西本願寺と東本願寺、日本で一番信者数が多い浄土真宗の本山である。
この両寺の寺内町として発展してきた界隈は、仏具店や神具店が数多く軒を連ねる。
この地で寺社関連の必需品を作る職人も多く、中にはかけがえのない技を持つ工房もある、そんな一軒が山本合金製作所だ。
名前だけを聞くと何やら工場のようだが、ここで作られているのは「和鏡」、神社のご神体として大切に守られている御神鏡を手仕事で手掛ける、日本でただ一つの工房なのだ。
"Polishing the divine spirit! A unique secret technique"
When you get off at JR Kyoto Station, the gateway to travel in Kyoto, many people will be surprised by the huge temple located just to the north.
Nishi Honganji and Higashi Honganji, which miraculously remain in the center of the city, are the head temples of the Jodo Shinshu sect, which has the largest number of believers in Japan.
The area around these two temples, which has developed as a temple town, is lined with many Buddhist and Shinto goods stores.
There are many craftsmen who make necessities related to temples and shrines in this area, and some of them are workshops with irreplaceable skills. One such workshop is Yamamoto Alloy Manufacturing Co., Ltd.
The name alone sounds like a factory, but what is made here is "Japanese mirrors," the only workshop in Japan that handcrafts sacred mirrors that are carefully protected as the sacred objects of shrines.
“炼化神灵！唯一的谜团”
当您在京都之旅的门户——JR京都站下车时，许多人可能会惊讶地看到北面有一座巨大的寺庙。
奇迹般地保留在市中心的西本愿寺和东本愿寺是日本信徒人数最多的净土真宗的总寺院。
该地区已发展成为两座寺庙的寺庙镇，两旁林立着许多出售佛教和圣器的商店。

後は型から出た金属を、物が映るようになるまでひたすら磨き上げる、その仕事を主に担当するのが、五代目の山本晃久さんだ。
まず、金属の表面を4種類の鑢（やすり）を使い分けて削っていく。
半日かけて削り終えたら次は、銑（せん）と呼ぶ道具で、鑢でついた線を消すように削っていくのだ。
そして砥石、更には炭で磨き込むと、到底物が映ると思えなかった金属が、見事に鏡に変わる。
機械で作る事もできるのだが、こちらの工房が手仕事にこだわるのには訳がある。
仕事の中には、過去に作られた御神鏡の修復も含まれる。
手仕事で作られたご神体に、機械を使うわけにはいかない。
想いが詰まった神社の宝に敬意を払い、今でも手で修復するのだという。
“Handmade with soul! Devoted to the mirror"
Japanese mirrors are made from alloys such as bronze or cupro-nickel, or a mixture of copper, zinc, and tin, and the work of a Japanese mirror maker begins with casting the material into a mold with auspicious patterns carved into the back.
The metal that comes out of the mold is then polished until it can reflect things, and this job is mainly handled by fifth-generation Yamamoto Akihisa.
First, the surface of the metal is scraped using four different types of files.
After half a day of scraping, the next step is to scrape away the lines made by the file with a tool called a sen.
After polishing with a whetstone and then charcoal, the metal, which was previously thought to be unable to reflect anything, is transformed into a beautiful mirror.
It can be made by machine, but there is a reason why this workshop insists on handwork.
The work also includes the restoration of sacred mirrors made in the past.
Machines cannot be used on sacred objects made by hand.
He still restores the shrine's treasures by hand, out of respect for the memories and feelings that surround them.
“灵魂的杰作！认真面对镜子”

代々受け継ぐ京都の手技
創業は江戸末期、山本さんは先々代の三代目から手ほどきを受けた。
「優しいじいさんでした、祖父と孫という関係なのが良かった、親子では距離が近すぎてこうはいかなかったと思う。」
祖父からの教えで特に心に残っていることがある。
「商売は二の次、職人はえぇ仕事することだけ考えとったらえぇ。」
そうすれば自然と仕事はついてくると言われたのだそう。
祖父から仕事のやりからと姿勢を教え込まれた山本さん、受け継いできた特別な仕事がある。
一見普通の鏡なのに、光を当てると像が映し出される「魔鏡」。
キリストの姿が浮かび上がるものは、隠れキリシタンが人目を忍んで崇拝するのに使われたという。
磨き込んだ鏡に微妙に凹凸を作り出来上がる魔境は、祖父がその復刻を手掛け、今その技を駆使できるのは山本さんだけだ。
えぇ仕事の賜物は、これからも「手」で作られ続けていくだろう。
"Kyoto craftsmanship handed down from generation to generation"
The company was founded at the end of the Edo period, and Yamamoto was taught by the third generation, who preceded him.
"He was a kind grandfather, and it was good that we had a grandfather-grandson relationship. I think that if the relationship between father and son was too close, it would not have been possible."
There is one teaching from his grandfather that has particularly stuck with him.
"Business is secondary, and as a craftsman, you just need to think about doing good work."
He told him that if he did that, work would come naturally.
Yamamoto, who was taught the way of working and the attitude by his grandfather, has inherited a special job.
A "magic mirror" that looks like an ordinary mirror at first glance, but when light is shone on it, an image is projected.
It is said that those that reveal the image of Christ were used by hidden Christians to worship in secret.
His grandfather recreated the magic realm, which is created by creating subtle irregularities in a polished mirror, and now Yamamoto is the only one who can use that technique.
The fruits of good work will continue to be made by hand.
“代代相传的京都技术”
公司成立于江户时代末期，山本先生受到前任第三代的指导。
“他是一位善良的老人，我们有祖父孙关系很好。我认为事情不会像他们那样发展，因为他们彼此太亲近了。”
祖父教给我的一件事让我印象深刻。
“生意是次要的，工匠应该只想做好自己的工作。”
