「桶はたる源」精密で正確な桶作り
京都・川端通の一本東にある繩手通は、
骨董品店やギャラリーが集まる京の粋人が集まる界隈。
その三条から少し下ったあたりに、間口１メートルほどのこじんまりした長屋がある。
江戸時代末期、１５０年余り前から桶を作り続けている「たる源」の工房だ。
五代目の暖簾を守る川尻洋三さんが生み出す桶は、実に繊細。
通常イメージする桶と違い、どこまでも薄く、きれいな柾目に目を奪われる。
「昔は容器と言ったら桶しかあらへんわけやからね。
桶の需要はめちゃめちゃあった。
洗濯桶に顔を洗う桶、水まけ桶に半切り、お櫃…、
一つの家に２５種類ぐらいの桶があったと聞いてます。」という川尻さん。
プラスチックの普及で桶の需要が少なくなった今も腕を
振るえるのは、ここで作られる桶がこの上なく美しく、かつ使い勝手が良いからだ。
今でも桶を必要とする料理屋や旅館など、京都でも名だたる老舗がたる源に発注するという。
「桶はたる源」と言われる京桶の工房で、匠のこだわりと情熱を伺った。

One street east of Kawabata-dori in Kyoto is Kyoto-dori.

``In the past, when we talked about containers,
the only thing we could think of was oke.
There was a huge demand for oke.
A washing tub, a tub to wash your face, a watering tub, a half cut, a bowl...
I heard that each house had about 25 types of oke. ”
Nevertheless the demand for oke has decreased recently due to the
spread of plastic,
He can still show his ability.
It's because oke which is made here is exquisitely beautiful and easy to use.
It is said that famous long-established stores such as restaurants and inns
in Kyoto orders oke to Tarugen.
We asked about the craftsman's commitment and passion at the Tarugen.
"桶 樽源"精确准确的桶制作"
京都川端通以东的一条街是京都通，
京都时尚聚集的街区，有许多骨董品店和画廊。
距离三条稍远一点，有一栋临街面约 1 米的建筑物。
有一个小唐楼。
自江户时代末期起，他们制作水桶已有 150 多年的历史。
这里是“Tarugen”工坊。
第五代店主川尻阳三所制作的木桶非常精致。

昔の自分の仕事が恥ずかしい
分業が多い京都の職人の世界にあって、たる源ではすべての工程を川尻さんが行う。
桶は側板と呼ばれる側面の板と、底板で構成される。

側板を隙間なくきれいに丸く組めるよう調整していく工程は熟練を要する。
「とにかく水が漏れたらアカンのやから。」
桶の仕事は正確に寸法通り木を加工していくことに尽きるという。
側板の側面を削るのに用いる鉋がある。
正直鉋と呼ばれる鉋の刃に側板を当て、ほんの僅か削っていく。
少し削っては物差しに当てて、求める勾配に近づいているか確認しながらさらに削る。
この時に使う物差しは「正直台」と呼ばれるのだそう。
「正直鉋に正直台、嘘をついたら、間違ったら桶にならんからそういう名前なんかなあ。」
たる源に残っている正直台は先々代が作ったものが多い。
全く狂いなく計れる物差しは老舗の宝物だ。
正確に少しずつ削られた板は、上に行くにつれて薄くなっている。
単に使えれば良いというだけでない代々のこだわり。
高さやバランス、たがの位置に至るまでを追求するのがたる源のスタイル。
「２０年 ３０年前に作った桶はバランスが悪かったり、今見たら下手やなと思います。」
たくさんの側板を一つの桶にするとき、川尻さんは同じ幅の木目を持つものだけを集める。
そして板を接着するのに用いるのは、自家製の小さな竹釘。
これを側板の側面に隠し釘として使う。
その結果完成した桶は、一見するとまるで一つの木から
出来ているかのようで、継ぎ目が全くわからない。
唯一無二の桶を求めて国内はおろか、海外のセレブからの注文も多い。
スティーブ・ジョブズ、トミー・リー・ジョーンズ、
看板も掲げていない京都の小さな桶屋を見つけてやって来たという。

Many of the honesty stands that remain at Tarugen were made by the previous generation.
A measuring stick that can measure accurately is a long-established treasure.

Tarugen's style is to pursue height, balance, and even the position of the hoop.
“The buckets made 20 or 30 years ago were unbalanced,

When combining many side panels into one bucket,
Mr. Kawajiri only collects wood grains with the same width.
Small homemade bamboo nails are used to glue the boards together.

木に囲まれて仕事をするということ
たる源で使う桶の材料は、スギ・ヒノキ・サワラなどの針葉樹。
柾目がきれいで香りも良いためだ。
中でも杉は奈良の銘木、吉野杉が一番だという。
「安定度や質、つまり木味が違う。吉野杉が一番やね。」
その吉野杉も育てる人が減少し、最近は手に入りにくくなってきているという。
黙々と杉を削る工房には、いつも新鮮な木の香りが漂う。
「香り、手触り、音。木の良さを感じられる仕事はいいもんですよ。」
５０年培ってきた正確無比な手仕事、
その技を絶やしたくないと１０年前に仕事を覚えだしたのが息子の基嗣さん。
はじめて見て驚いたのが父の仕事の早さだった。
「僕は時間をかければ何とか形にはできる。
でも父は同じものを正確に早く作れる。職人として一番大事なこと。」
かつては重宝された日用品も、今では廃れていくものが多い。
その中でも研ぎ澄まされた究極の一握りだけはいつまでも残る。
そんなことを木の香りが漂う京都の片隅で教わった気がする。
