古くは飛鳥時代から日本の文化の中枢を担ってきた古都、奈良。
清酒や日本茶など奈良にルーツを持つものは多いが、奈良筆もその一つである。
8世紀、空海が中国より製法を持ち帰り、
大和国に住む坂名井清川に作らせたのが始まりだと言われている。
以来、貴族や神社仏閣での文書に欠かせない道具として発展を遂げてきた。
墨で書いたものは千年経ても残るため、
日本の歴史を継承することに奈良筆は貢献してきたといえる。
そんな奈良筆の職人がかつて多く住んでいたのが「ならまち」、
世界遺産元興寺の境内地であり、今も昔の趣が残る町だ。
現在、奈良筆の製法を守る伝統工芸士はわずか7人、
その一人がならまちに工房を構える田中千代美さんだ。
"Originating in Nara! Traditional Crafts that Have Conveyed Japan "
The ancient capital Nara has been at the core of Japanese culture
since the Asuka period.
Many items, such as sake and Japanese tea, trace their roots to Nara, and Nara brushes are among them. It is said that in the 8th century,
Kukai brought the manufacturing method from China and had Sakanai Kiyokawa, who lived in Yamato Province, make them. Since then, Nara brushes have developed as essential tools for documents in noble households and temples. Writing in ink remains for a thousand years, so it can be said that Nara brushes have contributed to preserving Japanese history.
Many Nara brush artisans used to live in "Naramachi,"
the precincts of the World Heritage Site Gangoji Temple,
a town that still retains its old charm. Currently, there are only seven traditional craftsmen who preserve the manufacturing method of Nara brushes,
one of whom is Chiyomi Tanaka, who has a workshop in Naramachi.

古都奈良自飞鸟时代以来一直是日本文化的中枢。
奈良是清酒和日本茶等许多事物的发源地，其中也包括奈良毛笔。
据说，8世纪时，空海从中国带回了制造方法，并让住在大和国的坂名井清川制作。
自那时以来，奈良毛笔作为贵族和寺庙文书中不可或缺的工具得到了发展。
用墨书写的文字即使过了一千年也能保存下来，
因此可以说奈良毛笔为传承日本历史做出了贡献。
许多奈良毛笔工匠曾住在“奈良町”，这个世界遗产元兴寺的境内地，
现在仍保留着昔日的风貌。
目前，只有七位传统工艺师在守护奈良毛笔的制作方法，
其中之一是拥有奈良町工作坊的田中千代美。
指の感覚で毛を選ぶ
研ぎ澄まされた技
奈良筆の製造はもちろん全て手仕事、他の地域では分業で作る所もあるが、
奈良筆は一人の職人がすべての工程を手掛ける。
十二ある工程すべてを覚えるには忍耐と努力が必要、後継者がなかなか育たないのも
そのためだという。
奈良筆の材料となるのは、ヤギや馬、イタチなどの獣毛、これをどう配合するかによって
筆の仕上がりが変わる。
硬さやしなやかさ、コシの有無など、どんな筆を拵えるかが職人の腕の見せ所だ。
何種類もの毛をむらがないよう配合する工程が「練り混ぜ」、その名の通り獣毛を幾度も練り、
混ぜていく奈良筆独特の作業だ。
職人の真骨頂が「さらえ」と呼ばれる技。良い筆を作るにあたり、悪い毛を取り除くための手仕事。
親指の腹を毛先に当て、ちくちくした具合で毛先が切れた毛や逆毛を探していく。
目で見ても良い毛との違いは分からない、指の感覚だけが頼りの作業、門外漢には絶対にわからない
感覚を長年の経験と研鑽で探り当てる。
こうして一番良い毛がけが筆の穂先に使われる。
「命毛」と呼ばれる穂先の毛はまさに奈良筆の生命線。
長年使い続け命毛がすり減ってしまった筆は、もはや筆でなくただの刷毛なのだという。
“Selecting hairs by touch – Refined technique”
The production of Nara brushes is, of course, entirely hand-made. In other regions, production is often divided among multiple workers, but with Nara brushes, a single artisan handles all the steps. Learning all twelve processes requires patience and effort, which is why it is difficult to train successors.
The materials for Nara brushes include animal hairs from goats, horses, and weasels.
The final quality of the brush depends on how these hairs are blended. The skill of the artisan is evident in the hardness, suppleness, and resilience of the brush.
The process of blending various types of hair without creating inconsistencies is called "nerimaze," a unique method where the hairs are repeatedly kneaded and mixed. The pinnacle of the artisan's skill is a technique called "sarae," which involves removing bad hairs to create a good brush.
The artisan uses the pad of their thumb to feel the hairs, identifying broken or reversed hairs by their prickliness. This is a task that relies solely on touch, an expertise developed through years of experience and practice, which outsiders cannot understand.
The best hairs are used for the tip of the brush, known as "inochi-ge" or "life hairs," which are the lifeline of the Nara brush. A brush whose life hairs have worn down after years of use is no longer a brush but just a scrubber.
“通过指尖感触选择毛发——精湛的技艺”
奈良毛笔的制作当然完全是手工的。
在其他地区，制作过程通常是分工完成的，但奈良毛笔由一个工匠完成所有步骤。
学习所有十二道工序需要耐心和努力，这也是为什么很难培养接班人的原因。
奈良毛笔的材料包括山羊、马和黄鼠狼的兽毛。
通过如何配制这些毛发，笔的成品质量会有所不同。工匠的技艺体现在笔的硬度、
柔韧性和弹性上。
将不同种类的毛发均匀混合的过程称为“練混”，这是一种独特的奈良毛笔制作工序，
即将兽毛反复揉捏和混合。
工匠技艺的巅峰是被称为的技术，即为了制作好的毛笔而手工去除劣质毛发。
工匠用拇指的腹部触摸笔尖，通过刺痛感来寻找断裂的毛发或逆毛。
这是只能依靠触觉的工作，通过多年的经验和钻研而培养出的感觉，
外行人是绝对无法理解的。
这样一来，最好的毛发被用在笔的笔尖上，
被称为“命毛”的笔尖毛发正是奈良毛笔的生命线。
经过多年的使用，命毛被磨损的毛笔已不再是笔，只是一个刷子而已。
継続は力 奥が深いからこそ面白い
田中さんが奈良筆職人を志したのは40年前、新聞に掲載されていた奈良筆の後継者育成事業の
記事を目にしたことがきっかけだった。
「田中さんの奥さんと呼ばれるのが嫌だった。」専業主婦だった田中さん、誰々の妻、誰々の母というだけの役割から抜け出したいと願っていた。
田中千代美という一人の人間として認められる存在でありたい、その思いで飛び込んだ職人の
世界が彼女を変えた。
こんなに面白い仕事があるのか、覚えても覚えてもまだ奥が見えない。
新たな技術と知識を身に着けていく楽しさで40年はあっという間に過ぎたという。
すべてを一人で手掛ける奈良筆の仕事は、その責任も一人なら喜びも一人。
「あんたの筆本当に使いやすいわ」と言われることが何よりの喜びだという。
パソコンやスマホが普及し、手で字を書くことがめっきり減ってしまった現代、
それでも心を落ち着けて毛筆を動かすことは絶対に無くらないという田中さん。
「継続は力、私にはそれしかない」と言い切る奈良筆職人の瞳には確かな力が宿っていた。
"Persistence is power. It is fascinating because of its depth."
Chiyomi Tanaka decided to become a Nara brush artisan 40 years ago after reading an article in the newspaper about a program to train successors in the craft.
"I didn't like being called 'Tanaka's wife.'"
As a housewife, she longed to break free from the roles of someone's wife or mother. She wanted to be recognized as Chiyomi Tanaka, an individual, and it was this desire that led her into the world of artisanship, changing her life.
She discovered a job so fascinating that no matter how much she learned, there was always more to master. The joy of acquiring new skills and knowledge made 40 years fly by.
The work of making Nara brushes, done entirely by one person, brings both the responsibility and joy solely to the artisan.
"The greatest joy is when someone says, 'Your brush is really easy to use.'"
In today's world, where computers and smartphones are prevalent, and handwriting has become rare, Tanaka insists that the practice of writing with a brush to calm the mind will never disappear.
"Persistence is power, it's all I have," she says, with a determined look in her eyes that speaks volumes.
"坚持就是力量。正因为其深度而有趣。"
田中千代美在40年前决定成为奈良毛笔工匠，是因为看到了报纸上一篇关于奈良毛笔继承者培养计划的文章。“我不喜欢被叫作‘田中先生的妻子’。
”作为家庭主妇的她，渴望摆脱仅仅是某人的妻子或母亲的角色。
她希望以田中千代美这个个体得到认可，正是这种愿望把她带入了工匠的世界，
改变了她的生活。
她发现了一个如此有趣的工作，无论她学了多少，总有更多的东西要掌握。
学习新技术和知识的乐趣使40年不知不觉过去了。
奈良毛笔的制作工作完全由一个人完成，这种工作带来的责任和喜悦也都属于工匠本人。“最大的喜悦是有人说，‘你的笔真的很好用’。
”在电脑和智能手机普及、手写字变得稀少的现代，田中女士坚信，静心用毛笔书写的习惯绝对不会消失。
“坚持就是力量，这是我唯一拥有的东西，”她说，眼中充满了坚定的力量。
