鬼瓦のみを作るプロフェッショナル「鬼師」
滋賀・湖西に位置する坂本は、比叡山麓に神社仏閣が点在する歴史の町だ。
比叡山頂で修業を積み、引退した僧が隠居所として住んだたくさんの「里坊」が、町の景観を造り、伝統的建造物群保存地区の指定を受けている。
自ずとそんな寺院に携わる職業も多く、自然石を見事に積み上げた穴太衆や檜皮葺の屋根屋など、
見事な技で町を守ってきた。
そんな伝統技の一つが、鬼瓦を専門に手掛ける鬼師だ。
"Onishi: A professional who makes onigawara tiles"
Sakamoto, located on the west side of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture, is a historic town dotted with shrines and temples at the foot of Mount Hiei.
The many "satobo" (retirement homes) where retired monks who trained at the peak of Mount Hiei lived have shaped the town's landscape and led to the town being designated a preservation district for groups of traditional buildings.
"Naturally, there are many professions involved with such temples, including the Anōshu, who skillfully pile up natural stones, and the roofers specializing in cypress bark roofing, who have protected the town with their remarkable skills. One such traditional craft is that of the Onishi, who specialize in creating demon tiles."
“专门制作鬼瓦的专业人士“鬼師””
坂本位于滋贺县湖西市，是一座历史悠久的小镇，比睿山脚下的神社和寺庙星罗棋布。
比睿山山顶修行后退隐的僧侣们居住的“里坊”作为养老院，构成了该镇的景观，并被指定为传统建筑群保存地区。
自然与这些寺庙相关的职业也很多，包括巧妙堆砌天然石块的穴太众和负责桧皮葺屋顶的屋顶工，他们用精湛的技艺保护着这座小镇。其中一项传统技艺是专门制作鬼瓦的鬼师
文化財の修復に欠かせない！
鬼師の心
「屋根の仕事の中でも鬼師は花形やと、おじいさんがよく言ってました」
と話すのは、鬼師の家に生まれた四代目の美濃邉哲郎さん。
県の伝統工芸品に指定されているいぶし鬼瓦の技を受け継ぎ、父の惠一さんと共に同じ工房で腕
を振るう。
鬼瓦は屋根の端に置き、雨の侵入を防ぐと共に、その家に悪いことが起きないようにという厄除
けの意味も持つ。
美濃邉さんの仕事は、新しい鬼瓦の製作ももちろんだが、一番多いのは昔の鬼瓦の再現や修復だという。
「江戸初期、400年くらい前の鬼瓦を直すこともよくあります、よう残ったと思いますわ」
400年前の職人が作った物を修復し、それがまた直されるのは400年後、何とも雄大な話だ。
大きなものでは1トンを超えるものもあるという鬼瓦、機械のない昔にどうやって製作したのか、古の職人の仕事に心を凝らすのも鬼師の仕事だ。
「昔の職人さんの仕事をそのままに継承することが大事、何百年も見てもらうものだから中途半端な真似はできない」
京都や滋賀の文化財のほとんどが、美濃邉さんの工房に持ち込まれるという。
"The spirit of a master craftsman is essential for the restoration of cultural properties!"
"My grandfather used to say that among all roofing jobs, oni-shi is the most important," says Tetsuro Minobe, the fourth generation of a family of oni-shi. He inherited the technique of smoked oni-gawara, which is designated as a traditional craft of the prefecture, and works in the same workshop as his father, Keiichi.
Onigawara are placed on the edge of the roof to prevent rain from entering and also serve as a talisman to protect the house from bad luck.
Minobe's job is of course to create new onigawara tiles, but he says that his most common job is to recreate and restore old onigawara tiles.
"We often repair onigawara tiles from about 400 years ago, from the early Edo period, and I think they have survived well."
It's quite a grand story to repair something made by a craftsman 400 years ago, and then repair it again 400 years later.
The largest onigawara tiles can weigh over a ton, and the onigawari's job is to study the work of ancient craftsmen and find out how they were made in the old days when there were no machines.
"It's important to carry on the work of old craftsmen as it is, and since it will be enjoyed for hundreds of years, we can't do a half-hearted imitation."
Most of the cultural properties from Kyoto and Shiga are brought to Minobe's workshop.
“文化遗产修复中不可或缺的！鬼師的心”
“我祖父曾经说过，即使在屋顶行业，成为恶魔大师也是明星。”
鬼師家族第四代传人美浓部哲郎说道。
他继承了被指定为县传统工艺品的鬼河原制作技术，并与父亲庆一在同一工房工作。
鬼瓦原放置在屋顶的边缘，可以防止雨水进入房屋，也有辟邪的意义，防止房屋发生不好的事情。
当然，美浓部先生的工作包括制作新鬼河原，但他说他的大部分工作涉及重新创建和恢复旧鬼河原。
“在江户时代早期，修复已有 400 年左右历史的鬼河原瓷砖很常见，我认为它们幸存了下来。”
修复 400 年前工匠制作的东西，然后在 400 年后看到它再次被修复，这是一个令人惊奇的故事。
鬼河原很大，其中一些重达一吨以上，大西的工作就是密切关注古代工匠的工作，以及在没有机器的时代如何制作它们。
“将老工匠的作品原样传承下去很重要；这是几百年都会看到的东西，所以我们不能半心半意地模仿它。”
来自京都和滋贺的大部分文化财产都被带到美浓部的工作室。
一子相伝！鬼師を極める
幼いころから自宅兼工房が遊び場だったという美濃邉さん、小学校の自由研究はいつも自分で作った鬼瓦を提出していたという。
そんな環境で育った美濃邉さんが、父と同じ道を選んだのは自然な事だった。
父の惠一さんは鬼師歴50年以上のベテラン、修理すればその鬼瓦を作った職人の性格までわかるという。
「最初の頃は何で怒られてるかがわからんかった」
辛いのはできないことではなく、何ができていないのか、それすらわからなかったことだと話す。それでも父にしがみつくようにして学び20年、当初は昔の鬼師の仕事を目の当たりにして、手が動かなくなることもあったが、今では父にも認められる鬼師に成長した。
取材した日に工房にあったのは、京都東山の名刹である青蓮院門跡と、宮川町歌舞練場の鬼瓦。
近いうちに屋根に乗せられ、訪れる人の目を楽しませるに違いない。
「邪気を祓う鬼が、時に笑っているように見える、そんな鬼瓦を作りたい」
比叡山の麓で日本の宝を守り続ける鬼師は、己の魂を込めて鬼面に向き合っている。
"Passed down from father to son! Mastering the art of Onishi"
Minobe says that his home and workshop was his playground from a young age, and that he would always submit onigawara tiles that he had made himself for his independent study projects in elementary school.
Growing up in such an environment, it was only natural that Minobe would choose the same path as his father.
His father, Keiichi, is a veteran onigawara maker with over 50 years of experience, and says that by repairing a onigawara tile, you can even tell the character of the craftsman who made it.
"At first, I didn't know why I was being scolded." He says that the hardest part wasn't that he couldn't do something, but that he didn't even know what he couldn't do. Still, he stuck to his father and learned for 20 years. At first, he would sometimes freeze up when he saw the old Onishi's work, but now he has grown into an Onishi that even his father recognizes.
On the day of our visit, the workshop featured onigawara tiles from Shoren-in Temple, a famous temple in Kyoto's Higashiyama area, and Miyagawacho Kaburenjo Theater.
They will no doubt be installed on roofs soon, delighting the eyes of visitors.
"I want to make onigawara tiles that look like demons that exorcise evil spirits but sometimes smile." The oni master who continues to protect Japan's treasures at the foot of Mount Hiei pours his soul into each demon mask.
"一子相传！精通鬼师之道"
美浓部先生说，他的家和工作室从小就是他的游乐场，他总会提交小学自学时制作的鬼河原瓷砖。
在这样的环境下长大的美浓部自然会选择与父亲相同的道路。
她的父亲庆一是一位拥有50多年经验的资深食人魔制造者，当他修复一块瓷砖时，他可以看出制作它的工匠的个性。
“一开始，我不明白他们为什么生气。”
他说，困难不是他做不到，而是他根本不知道自己做不到什么。尽管如此，他还是紧跟着父亲学习了20年。起初，他在目睹老大西的作品后，有时会手脚困难，但现在他已经成长为连父亲都认识的大西。
采访当天，有来自京都东山名寺青莲院门迹和宫川町甲部连城的鬼河原。
我相信在不久的将来它会被安装在屋顶上以取悦游客的眼睛。
“我想制作出鬼河原瓷砖，看起来就像驱邪的恶魔有时会微笑一样。”
继续守护比睿山脚下的日本宝藏的大西人，全心全意地面对鬼面具。
