奈良県の南東部に位置する川上村は、吉野川の源流にあたる清流の里、村内に２つもダムを持つ。豊かな水の源はもちろん山、面積の実に９５パーセントが山林なのだ。
この地の人々は炭を焼き、獣を捕らえ、野草を摘み、と山の恵みを享受して暮らしてきた。
中でも家計の柱となってきたのが吉野杉の植林と育成だ。
日本の植林の中で記録されている最古が川上村のもの、およそ５００年前のことだ。
驚くべきことに、その当時の杉は今も現役で堂々と生えている。
自然林と人工林、いわゆる植林との違いは人の手がかかっているかどうか、中でもこの地の「吉野杉」は、最大の手間で丹精込めて育てられてきた。
主な用途は家の柱だった吉野杉の建材、節が出ないようきれいに枝打ちし、密植して木を太らせないようにすることで細かい年輪を作る。
しかも自ら植えた杉が大きくなって伐採されるのは、子供の世代になってから。
親が育てた木を伐り、自分は未来に遺すために世話をする、そうやって連綿とつないできた吉野林業の伝統。
しかし家屋が木造建築中心だった時代は終わり、せっかく見事に育てた木も高値で売れなくなった今、吉野杉を使って新たな価値を生み出す職人がいる。

"500 years old! Home of the mountainous Yoshino cedars"

Kawakami Village, located in the southeastern part of Nara Prefecture, is a village of clear water at the source of the Yoshino River, and has two dams within the village. The source of the abundant water is of course the mountains, and 95 percent of the area is covered by forests.
The people of this area have made their living by burning charcoal, hunting animals, and picking wild herbs, enjoying the blessings of the mountains.
The planting and cultivation of Yoshino cedar trees has been the mainstay of household income.
The oldest recorded plantation in Japan is in Kawakami Village, dating back approximately 500 years.
Amazingly, the cedars from that time are still standing and growing proudly today.
The difference between natural forests and artificial forests, or so-called plantations, is the amount of human effort involved, and the Yoshino cedars here have been cultivated with the greatest care and effort.
Yoshino cedar was mainly used as building material for house pillars, and by neatly pruning the branches to prevent knots from appearing and planting them closely together to prevent the trees from becoming thick, fine annual rings are produced.
Moreover, it is only by the children's generation that the cedars that people plant grow large enough to be cut down.
Parents cut down the trees that they have grown and then look after them to leave them for the future, and this is how the tradition of Yoshino forestry has been passed down unbroken.
However, the era in which houses were mainly made of wood is over, and now that the beautiful trees that were so painstakingly grown can no longer be sold for high prices, there is a craftsman who is creating new value using Yoshino cedar.
His name is Kobayashi Kiyotaka, a woodworker.

"500岁了！吉野杉的故乡"

川上村位于奈良县东南部，是吉野川源头的一个清溪村，村内有两座水坝。丰富的水源当然是山脉，而事实上95%的面积都是森林。
这一带的人们以烧炭、狩猎动物、采摘野花、享受山林恩赐为生。
家庭收入的主要来源是种植吉野杉树。
日本有记载的最古老的种植园位于川上村，距今已有 500 多年的历史。
令人惊讶的是，当时的雪松仍然被积极使用，并且仍在自豪地生长。
天然林和人工林，或者说人工林的区别在于是否有人为干预，这里种植的“吉野杉”是经过精心培育的。
主要用途是吉野杉，它是房子的支柱，作为建筑材料。树木经过精心修剪，避免出现节疤，并紧密种植，以防止树木变胖，形成精细的年轮。
更何况，他们自己种下的雪松，只会被他们的子孙一代生长、砍伐。
吉野林业的传统是砍伐父母所种植的树木并照顾它们，以便将它们传给子孙后代，这一传统代代相传。
然而，房屋主要用木头建造的时代已经结束，即使是精心培育的树木也无法卖高价。现在，有工匠正在利用吉野杉创造新的价值。
